Renovating a century-old factory into a modern, LEED Gold certified office
As the industry leader in daylight control, Mecho saw the need to critically examine daylight usage and energy efficiency in their converted 1918 factory building. To benefit the growing employee base, Mecho wanted to provide an attractive, comfortable, open, and efficient office area. As part of Mecho’s sustainability efforts, it was also important to lower reliance on electric lighting and energy consumption and earn LEED Gold certification.

Goals for Light Control
Mecho needed to convert their 100-year old factory building into a sleek, welcoming, and modern showcase for daylight control and energy conservation in an environmentally friendly manner. Because it’s well documented that greater access to natural light increases building occupant’s productivity and overall wellness, Mecho wanted to incorporate more natural light and reduce the intrusion of solar glare and heat gain in their space while maintaining valuable outside views.

Identified, Designed, and Put in Place
For optimum daylight control, Mecho incorporated SolarTrac®, the revolutionary shade control system that automatically raises or lowers shades to optimize natural light. By putting shades in the right position before the sun gets there, SolarTrac reduces solar glare and heat gain, while increasing the amount of usable daylight, views to the outside, and energy savings.
Mecho also wanted to demonstrate its commitment to sustainability by pursuing LEED Gold certification by sourcing sustainable materials and using green construction practices.

Project Results
Since completion, Mecho has reported a nearly 40% reduction in lighting energy use relative to estimated consumption and cut peak energy demand and lighting power density. The new systems improve space flexibility, visual and thermal comfort, and occupant satisfaction. Employees enjoy the additional daylight made possible by the advanced shading and lighting controls, and they have reported feeling more energized and productive during the day. Mecho’s achievements in environmentally friendly, sustainable building practices has also netted them LEED Gold certification.
